The major challenge for science education today is the rapidly changing technology that needs to be integrated in the teaching–learning processes. Transfer of knowledge from research laboratories to educationists directly will be a correct step in this direction. The Science Academies’ Refresher Course on ‘Advances in Plant and Animal Biotechnology’ promises knowledge updates in plant tissue culture techniques, developing transgenics, molecular confirmation and transgene expression, primary stem cell cultures, bio-informatics and allied techniques. The two-week Course will be held from 3 to 16 February 2013 spread over a few institutions in Mumbai (IWSA, Vashi; ACTREC, Kharghar; Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil College, Vashi; Dr D. Y. Patil University, Belapur). It aims at providing hands-on-training in plant and animal cell handling, isolation of DNA and selection of vector systems for cloning, in addition to the harnessing of bioinformatics, knowledge of IPR, writing of project proposals and ethics in biotechnology. The course will also comprise of lecture-demonstration sessions on new generation sequencers, live animal imaging, confocal microscopy, etc.

Post-graduate teachers from Life Sciences who wish to participate in the Refresher Course may apply through proper channel with the following details – name, date of birth, gender, e-mail, official and residential addresses, telephone numbers, academic qualifications, courses taught, positions held and tenure. Submission of a brief statement (not more than 500 words) why they think the Course will improve their classroom teaching should also be sent. Applications should reach the Course Coordinator before 15 December 2012.

Selected candidates will be informed by the first week of January 2013 and outstation candidates will be provided accommodation, local travel and round trip
